Client Overview

American Golf is the UK’s largest golf retailer, operating a network of retail stores, driving ranges and a central headquarters in Warrington. The organisation is committed to improving operational efficiency and reducing energy consumption across its sites while maintaining high standards of service for customers.

To support regulatory compliance and sustainability objectives, American Golf engaged Inteb to undertake an Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) Phase 3 audit, focusing on site energy consumption. The audit aimed to identify practical energy efficiency measures, quantify potential savings, and ensure all findings were incorporated into a compliant ESOS Action Plan.

Client Objectives

American Golf sought to understand its energy use and reduce consumption across its operations. Key objectives included:

ESOS Compliance and Assessment:

  • Complete ESOS Phase 3 energy audits across a representative sample of sites.
  • Assess all relevant areas of significant energy consumption applicable to American Golf.

Representative Sampling Methodology:

  • Complete seven ESOS energy assessments using a representative sampling approach:
  1. Two audits from A-Road, Driving Range, and Retail Park store types
  2. One audit of the Head Office in Warrington

Identification of Energy Saving Opportunities:

  • Quantify annual energy savings and operational efficiencies from site energy consumption.
  • Provide actionable recommendations suitable for inclusion in the ESOS Action Plan.

Our Approach and Results

Inteb worked closely with American Golf to conduct detailed energy assessments, combining on-site observations with data analysis to provide a comprehensive view of energy use across the organisation.

1. Site Energy Assessments

Through the representative sample of seven sites, we identified opportunities to reduce energy consumption. One example included the implementation of Automatic Meter Reads (AMR) across the sample sites, which would deliver estimated annual energy savings of approximately 166,948 kWh.

The site assessments provided clear insights into energy use patterns across retail, driving range and office environments, allowing American Golf to prioritise initiatives with the greatest potential impact.

2. ESOS Action Plan Integration

All energy saving opportunities identified during the audits, were incorporated into American Golf’s ESOS Action Plan, ensuring compliance with Phase 3 requirements. The recommendations included quantified annual energy savings and practical guidance on implementation.

Conclusion

Our collaboration with American Golf provided a clear understanding of energy use across their operations, identifying measurable opportunities to reduce consumption and improve efficiency. By combining detailed audits, representative sampling and data analysis, we delivered actionable recommendations that were incorporated into a compliant ESOS Action Plan.

This case study highlights how structured energy assessments and practical recommendations can support organisations in meeting regulatory requirements. American Golf’s approach demonstrates that even complex, multi-site operations can effectively reduce energy consumption and improve sustainability performance through targeted interventions.
